Are you thinking about using an overnight face mask for the first time?
Here we explain what happens to your skin when you use a leave-on face mask at night and explain why our natural overnight face mask is so effective at hydrating the skin whilst you sleep.
What is an overnight face mask?
Overnight face masks are usually thick, leave-on skin creams that are applied to the skin before bed and left to sink into the skin overnight.
Ideal for helping you wake to fresh, glowing skin, overnight face masks can keep skin comfortably hydrated overnight and may also contain actives that support the skin’s nightly repair processes.
What are the benefits of overnight face masks?
The benefits of an overnight face mask will very much depend on the face mask’s formulation and its active ingredients.
Some overnight skin creams purely provide intense skin hydration to help skin counteract night-time water loss.
Skin mainly repairs itself at night and overnight face masks can also be formulated with actives that help the skin cells to repair and rejuvenate.

How often should you use an overnight face mask?
Most skin types will only need to apply an overnight face mask 1- 2 times a week.
You may want to increase you use of your skin mask in the winter months when skin-drying central heating leaves skin more prone to feeling dry and tight in the morning.
Exfoliating AHA skin care should only be used at night, and it is a good idea to then apply an overnight mask that has a high oil content and can help strengthen the skin barrier with intense hydration.
Age Defy+ Hydra Glow Face Mask is the perfect partner product of our AHA Radiance Peel Mask which uses 5 fruit AHAs to gently exfoliate the skin surface. Read more about how to use AHA skin care.
Are overnight face masks suitable for all skin types?
Most skin types can benefit from overnight face masks but leave-on masks are perhaps most beneficial for dry and older skin types.
Thinner, older skin produces less Hyaluronic Acid and can be more prone to dehydration because it cannot hold onto moisture as effectively as younger skin.
Dry skin may also struggle to stay hydrated and if your skin frequently feels dry and tight, you may find it comforting to use an overnight face mask.
Thin, dry and damaged skin can be easily irritated and if you know that your skin cannot tolerate skin care that uses essential oils in its formulation, then Age Defy+ Hydra Glow Face Mask may not be suitable for you.

How to apply a leave-on mask
Age Defy+ Hydra Glow Sleep mask will provide the best results when used regularly and we suggest applying it 1-2 times a week if you have normal or combination skin and 2-3 times a week if you have dry skin.
Always apply it to clean skin and to aid absorption of the mask, gently exfoliate the skin before you apply it. You should not need to moisturise first.
For best results from our Hydra-Glow Sleep Mask, apply enough product so that a fine layer coats the skin’s surface. Leave it to work its magic overnight then cleanse as normal in the morning.
How to remove an overnight mask
Applying the Hydra-Glow Sleep Mask will help you to wake up with plumper, healthier skin. Whilst most of the product will be absorbed by the skin as you sleep, any face mask excess should be removed in the morning.
Cleansing the skin in the morning will also help to remove waste products and dead skin cells that have been released by the skin overnight.
For best results we recommend massaging a small amount of the Purify & Hydrate Cream Cleanser over the skin then rinsing the skin with warm water.
