Thinking of making the switch to solid shampoo but not sure what to expect?

Don’t worry, this guide shows you how to use a shampoo bar for the first time and explains exactly what to expect when you make the shampoo bar switch.

How to use a shampoo bar

Something that we often get asked is: “How can I make my beauty routine more sustainable?”. We think that a great place to start is by swapping to a plastic-free shampoo bar.

A great choice for your hair and for the planet, solid shampoos are one of the best beauty swaps you can make when you want to cut down on your use of plastic and making the switch is oh so easy!

Shampoo Bars

To use a shampoo bar, simply wet your hair as usual and rub the bar directly onto your scalp to create a lather. Gently work the lather through the lengths of your hair, then rinse the shampoo out.

That’s all there is to it! See, so easy!

Cheryl H found the switch to our Citrus & Ginger Shampoo seamless:

Transitioning to a shampoo bar

It might take you a couple of goes to get the level of lather just right, but your hair will soon adjust to your new plastic-free hair care routine.

Most people find that they need to wash their hair less frequently than with liquid shampoo. Your hair should feel fresher, less frizzy and healthier too.

If you notice that initially your hair feels greasy after using a shampoo bar, don’t waste all your hard work. Give your hair time to adjust to its new routine and maybe wash it twice during the transition making sure that you rinse your hair thoroughly.

Catherine C says Scent Free Shampoo Bar helped soothe her frizz and her scalp.

You may want to experiment with and without conditioner too. Some people find that their shampoo bar is conditioning enough, and they no longer need a separate conditioner.

Melissa B was surprised by how gentle our shampoo bars are:

Do shampoo bars really work?

If you’ve never tried a shampoo bar before, you may well have questions. Do our natural shampoo bars really foam? Do they actually clean hair properly? Do they wash out without residue?

A kinder way to wash your hair and scalp, our shampoo bars create mild, hair-softening lather that is known in the beauty world as baby foam!

Suitable for those prone to a sensitive or easily irritated scalp, baby foam lathers well in both hard and soft water and produces tight-knit bubbles. It washes out easily too!

It’s created from some pretty special science which we’ll explain here.

You see, our natural shampoo bars use a few different types of foaming ingredient – otherwise known as surfactants.

  • Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is our Anomic surfactant. Derived from Coconut, it has negatively charged hydrophilic ends which mean they can lift away dirt with ease

  • The hair smoothing arachidyl alcohols that we use in our shampoo bars are conditioning Cationic surfactants. 100% plant-based, these have a positive charge on their hydrophilic end. This gives great anti-static benefits that are perfect for fighting frizz.
