A soothing scalp massage is certainly relaxing, but could it also encourage stronger hair growth and a healthy scalp?
In this post we explore the benefits of scalp massage techniques alongside natural hair care products that support scalp health. We also have a how-to guide for giving yourself a relaxing scalp massage.
The benefits of scalp massage
You can encourage a soothed scalp and healthy hair growth with scalp massage techniques.
A self-care practice that everyone can do at home, a warm oil massage has the following benefits:
- It conditions the scalp, helping to prevent flakes and dry, itchy scalp
- It helps enhance blood circulation in the head and neck area. When the scalp is “tight” from stress, circulation and hair growth are impeded
- It helps strengthen the roots of the hair and nourishes the hair-shafts, promoting new hair growth and strengthening existing hair
- The massage helps relax the scalp and the muscles in the neck

UK internet searches for scalp health have also grown with some publications claiming that searches around scalp health increased by as much as 300% between 2021 and 2022[ii].

Best hair oils for a scalp massage
In the UK scalp massage tools are widely available but you don’t have to use a massage tool at all.
A relaxing scalp massage is easy to do at home with a warm oil and the following base oils are all useful for scalp massage. By choosing the right essential oil for your hair and scalp, you can boost the benefits of your scalp massage.
Some oils should not be applied directly to the skin or scalp so always check that the chosen oil is safe to use on the scalp before you begin your massage.
Best scalp massage oil for dry hair
Coconut Oil melts in the warmth of your hands and the oil is particularly well suited for scalp massages because it has conditioning properties that are ideal for dry hair.
Best scalp massage oil for greasy hair
Jojoba Oil is not actually an oil but liquid wax. It is highly penetrative and helps to encourage a healthy and balanced scalp by dissolving sebum and unblocking pores.
Best scalp massage oil for hair growth
Both Avocado and Olive Oil are rich in nourishing vitamins and are excellent choices for improving blood flow to the scalp and stimulating hair growth.
Shampoos for rinsing after a scalp massage
Remember to wash your hair thoroughly after your scalp massage. Our natural and organic shampoos are gentle on the scalp and contain plant extracts and oils with a bounty of benefits for a healthy scalp and clean, shiny hair.
Alternatively, you can go plastic-free with one of our natural shampoo bars.
Scalp massage techniques to try at home
Use our 4-step routine and see if you can benefit from a relaxing scalp massage
Step 1: Warm the oil
Pour your preferred carrier oil into a bowl and warm the oil by placing the bowl in some hot water. The oil should be warm but comfortable to the touch, alternatively warm a little oil by rubbing your hands together.
Step 2: Massage your scalp
Using the pads of your fingers, work the oil into your scalp using circular motions. Slow, deliberate movements are relaxing whereas vigorous movement helps enhance energy and circulation.
Apply the oil little by little to different parts of your scalp, parting your hair as needed.
Step 3: Rest
Allow 30-60 minutes for your hair to absorb the oils. For a more intense hair conditioning treat, leave the oil on overnight, protecting your pillow with a towel.
Step 4: Rinse
Wash your hair as usual with our natural shampoos.
